The largest battle of the Revolutionary War began with the British moving into position on Long Island

An action of the American Revolutionary War at the western edge of Long Island in the present-day Brooklyn, New York. The British defeated the Americans and gained access to the strategically important Port of New York, which they held for the rest of the war. It was the first major battle to take place after the United States declared its independence on July 4, and in troop deployment and combat, it was the biggest battle of the war.

 To provoke curiosity and interest in its world-class collection, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center provides a legible point of arrival and orientation, an interface between garden and city, culture and cultivation. The building is conceived as an inhabitable topography that defines a new threshold between the city and the constructed landscapes of the fifty-two-acre garden. Sited at Washington Avenue and within the berm that separates the Brooklyn Museum parking lot from the Botanic Garden, the Visitor Center provides clear orientation and access to the major garden precincts such as the Japanese Garden and the Cherry Esplanade. The Center includes an exhibition gallery, information lobby, orientation room, gift shop, caf&eacute;, and an events space. 

 The Robert W. Wilson Overlook creates a new destination in New York City's Brooklyn Botanic Garden with stunning views over the Cherry Esplanade and Garden at large. Encompassing 1.25 acres of the Garden's most significant unprogrammed site, north of the Cherry Esplanade, the Overlook features a new garden of flowering Crape myrtle trees and an immersive four-season planting design of ornamental grasses and perennials. The Overlook encourages visitor engagement with this world-class collection through the creation of communal gathering spaces and new vantage points. A subtly sloping switchback pathway with sculptural retaining walls enhances the Garden's circulation by connecting the top and bottom of the hillside with a newly accessible route. This network of paths, walls, and landscape extends the inhabitable topography realized in the adjacent Diane H. &amp; Joseph S. Steinberg Visitor Center, completed by Weiss/Manfredi in 2012.

 Architects Michael Manfredi and Marion Weiss talk about the Brooklyn Botanical Garden Visitor Center. The architects consciously designed the space takes the viewer from a piece of architecture to something that is almost exclusively a landscape. 

James Samuel Thomas Stranahan (April 25, 1808 – September 3, 1898) was a United States Representative from New York, and a municipal official of the City of Brooklyn. In 1844, Stranahan moved to Brooklyn, and was elected alderman of that city in 1848. He was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress and held office from March 4, 1855, to March 3, 1857. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress and was appointed as a member of the metropolitan police commission on January 1, 1857. He was a presidential elector on the Republican tickets in 1860 and 1888, and was the president of the Brooklyn Park Commission from 1860 to 1882, where he was instrumental in securing funding and political support for Brooklyn's Prospect Park.[4] For his work in this regard, he became known as the "Baron Haussman of Brooklyn," a not-always-complimentary reference to the man who famously altered Paris's urban fabric.[5] Stranahan was a trustee of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge Company, serving as its President in 1885[4] and presided at its dedication on May 24, 1883.[4] In the 1890s, Stranahan promoted the consolidation of City of Brooklyn into a Greater New York and was an active member in the Commission that framed the first charter for the City of Greater New York.[2]

The Gateway Building at Brooklyn Botanic Garden welcomes guests and reactivates the Flatbush Avenue entrance. An ambitious renovation to the south end of the 52-acre landscape led by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates includes a series of buildings and spaces we designed. The building features a handcrafted brick fa&ccedil;ade and a distinctive zinc sculpted roof. With admissions and comfort station facilities, the building`s long parallelogram form holds the street corner alongside the McKim, Mead, and White-designed arch at the former entrance at Flatbush Avenue and Empire Boulevard.

Abraham Lincoln Statue

Henry Warner Slocum Sr. (September 24, 1827 – April 14, 1894), was a Union general during the American Civil War and later served in the United States House of Representatives from New York. During the war, he was one of the youngest major generals in the Army and fought numerous major battles in the Eastern Theater and in Georgia and the Carolinas. While commanding a regiment, a brigade, a division, and a corps in the Army of the Potomac, he saw action at First Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, Harpers Ferry, South Mountain, Antietam, and Chancellorsville.At Gettysburg, he was the senior Union General in the Field, under Gen. George G. Meade. During the battle, he held the Union right from Culp's Hill to across the Baltimore Pike. His successful defense of Culp's Hill was crucial to the Union victory at Gettysburg. After the fall of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, splitting the southern Confederacy, Slocum was appointed military commander of the district. Slocum participated in the Atlanta Campaign and was the first commander to enter the city on September 2, 1864. He then served as occupation commander of Atlanta.

The Marquis De Lafayette, this monument was erected and presented by Henry Harteau a distinguished citizen of Brooklyn to be an enduring tribute to the memory of one who as a friend and companion of the immortal Washington fought to establish in our country those vital principles of liberty and human brotherhood which he afterward labored to establish in his own.

This memorial was unveiled and dedicated by Marshall Joffre and M. Vivani of the French War Commission, May 10, 1917

 Designed and constructed over a thirty-year period (1865-1895) by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the masterminds behind Central Park, Prospect Park has blossomed into a premiere destination for Brooklyn visitors and residents alike. Widely known for its intricate manmade watercourse (wetlands) and its trees, the bulk of Brooklyn's remaining indigenous forest, the park is a highly functional green space. Contained within its 585 acres are a zoo, the first urban-area Audubon Center in the nation, an ice rink, a band shell, a carousel, and dozens of athletic and recreational facilities.

Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe talks about the history of Morningside Park, Harlem's southernmost historic park, and some of its notable design features and amenities. The park was designed by the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and took years to complete; Benepe charts the difficult construction of this New York City landmark and how it has evolved over the years, including the controversial 1968 Columbia University plan to build a gymnasium on the park's edge.

New York also has the honor of being the first city to dedicate a statue of the Sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln in his honor, the Henry Kirke Brown statue in Prospect Park.
